The importance in my work is drawn from the physical nature of the mark and the authenticity that it creates. That authenticity is derived from the history of the layers of paint. These layers of paint are built up to a superficial top layer that is then carved into to reveal the history of layers beneath. The method in which I create these carved marks creates a layer in and of itself. I repeat this process multiple times, creating a manipulative history of the existing layers. This process is intended to redefine how the nature of paint as a material is perceived. The work becomes a narrative in which the subject and concept is the paint and the depth it can create with line, color and movement as a non-representative material. This entire body of work creates the idea of paint having its own identity as an object rather than a medium.
